Spezia head coach Leonardo Semplici believes that the Aquilotti’s shock win against Inter yesterday evening can give the team a big boost in terms of their self-belief.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after the match, via FCInterNews, the coach also noted that this is the first time that he’s managed to beat the Nerazzurri in his career.

Semplici took over Spezia with a real job on his hands, as the Ligurian teams were tumbling down the table to a position perilously close to the relegation places following a solid start to the season.

The 55-year-old had already kept Cagliari in the top flight after taking over in a similar position two seasons ago, however, whilst he also kept SPAL safe for several seasons after getting them promoted from Serie B.

After two promising draws against the likes of Udinese and Hellas Verona, Semplici’s project at the Stadio Alberto Picco has really achieved liftoff with a surprise win over Inter.

With it, the coach not only secured a massive result that will help the Aquilotti greatly in their efforts to avoid the drop, but on a personal level he also beat an opponent he has never managed to whilst coaching in Serie A with SPAL and Cagliari.

“It’s not often that you manage to beat Inter, it’s must first time doing so, it was a great match, difficult but we never gave up, even after they equalized and it seemed like the inertia was going the way of Inter we found a way to re-take the lead.”

“I hope that now our confidence can grow and I’ll try to give everyone the confidence necessary to reach our goals.”
