Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi has made more clinical finishing and better protection against counterattacks the two main themes of his team talk on how to react to Friday’s shock loss away to Spezia.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the coach emphasized to his players that whilst there were many positives to take from their performance in La Spezia, these two factors were unacceptable.
Inter had no lack of possession against Spezia, and they had numerous cracks at goal, 26 in total.
However, only one goal actually arrived from all of that huffing and puffing, coming through striker Romelu Lukaku late in the second half.
The statistics in matches where Inter have played with the majority of the ball have been damning since the start from the winter break, as 93 shots in total had also been taken against Monza, Empoli, Sampdoria, and Bologna, but only twenty were on target.
From those 93 attempts, three goals in total came about.
Inzaghi stressed this issue to his players, telling them that at times they must be more selective about when they choose to shoot rather than simply wasting possession with a hopeful effort out of frustration.
Meanwhile, Spezia’s first goal was a real illustration of what can happen when the team switches off in counterattacking situations.
For this reason, the constant attention to protect against these kinds of quick breaks was the other main theme of Inzaghi’s talk to his team.
