Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that the Nerazzurri are in the position that they’re in due to the fact that they’ve never really strengthened in the transfer market to build on past successes.

Speaking on Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInter1908, the former defender noted that Inter already started dismantling their squad as soon as they won the Serie A title, and also that players cannot feel that their situation at the club is secure because of this.

Inter’s financial situation since the start of the pandemic has been well-known, and the effect that it has had on the squad has been straightforward to observe.

Starting with the sales of Achraf Hakimi and Romelu Lukaku in the summer of 2021 and leading to the anticipated departure of Milan Skriniar and likely another big sale this summer, the feeling is that Inter clearly struggle to keep hold of all their top players.

From Bergomi’s perspective, this has led to a situation where not only are Inter unable to keep the project on the pitch at anything like its peak over a sustained period, but also where doubts start to creep into the minds of the players themselves.

“The players know that, over the past three years, every one of them will end up in turn on the transfer market,” the former defender noted.

“In my opinion, that has a big impact.”

“Three years ago they won the Scudetto, which would normally mean adding one or two players to the existing squad to reinforce themselves and also strengthen for the Champions League,” Bergomi noted.

“Instead, there have only been transfer windows where Inter have ended up needing to make a profit,” he continued.

“I don’t know exactly what the club’s financial problems are, but clearly it’s something that’s having an effect on the team.”
