Inter will be hoping to write another chapter in their history in Europe’s top competition in this evening’s Champions League round of sixteen second leg against Porto, and there is no shortage of iconic matches and moments already.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who note that the Nerazzurri have almost sixty years of history on the biggest stage, whether it has been in the Champions League or the European Cup.

One of Inter’s first real great moments in Europe, the Gazzetta argue, was a 3-0 win over Liverpool in 1965, a crucial stepping stone in the Nerazzurri’s second European Cup win.

The Nerazzurri needed to overturn a 3-1 deficit from the first leg that night, and they did so to reach the final, which they won against Benfica.

Next came a tie in the 1971-72 season which saw Inter wind up progressing to the quarterfinals of the European Cup after a 7-1 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach was annulled due to Nerazzurri striker Roberto Boninsegna being hit with a soda can amid a barrage from the crowd.

After that match was annulled, Inter won 4-2 at the San Siro before holding on for a goalless draw in Germany.

A 1-0 win away to Red Star Belgrade in the second leg of a quarterfinal tie in 1981 saw Inter progress after an early goal and then a backs-to-the-wall defensive display, highlighted by an excellent display by the legendary Beppe Bergomi at just seventeen years of age.

During the Treble season, a very late comeback win over Dynamo Kiev in the group stage proved vital to advance to the knockout rounds, whilst wins against Chelsea in the round of sixteen and Barcelona in the semifinals have been among the Nerazzurri’s most memorable matches of the past couple decades.

A 3-2 win over Bayern Munich the following season saw the Nerazzurri advance to the quarterfinals on away goals, although they fell to Schalke in the next round.

The Gazzetta then note the crazy 3-3 draw away to Barcelona in the group stage as yet another piece of Inter history, from only a few months ago.

That match proved vital in setting up Inter’s round of sixteen tie against Porto, and now they will be hoping that they can write another similar chapter.
