Inter coach Simone Inzaghi’s adherence to a 3-5-2 formation has proved to make his team a very tough side to break down in the Champions League.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who note that the Nerazzurri have managed to keep three vital clean sheets against top opposition in Europe.

In Serie A, Inzaghi’s use of the 3-5-2 shape to the exclusion of virtually all others has been one of the major points of criticism against the 46-year-old, who has been accused of lacking a Plan B in matches where the shape hasn’t been getting the job done.

However, in Europe, the team’s strict organization in the former Lazio coach’s preferred shape has given them a sense of defensive security on the biggest stage.

Against Barcelona and Porto sides who have thrown everything at them in do-or-die matches, Inter have been able to rely on their sense of solidity with each player clearly knowing their role within the shape.

For the Gazzetta, this has been the aspect that has given Inter the extra element needed for top-level European competition, as it has made them a defensive fortress.
