Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi feels that the handball by Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot in the buildup to the Bianconeri’s goal in a 1-0 victory in the Derby d’Italia made it so that there’s no way the goal should’ve stood.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN following the match, via FCInterNews, the Nerazzurri coach admitted that he finds it difficult to overlook the flashpoint with the Frenchman’s handball and talk about any other aspect of the match.
Inter felt aggrieved that Filip Kostic’s first-half goal for Juventus was allowed to stand, given that the ball had clearly come off the arm of Bianconeri midfielder Rabiot in the buildup to the Serb’s effort.
There had been a lengthy VAR check which suggested that the officials were checking the incident, but in the end they decided not to disallow the goal.
Whilst it was not entirely clear what the officials’ rationale had been, it had appeared to be the case that they felt that while the contact was there, it was either unintentional or incidental.
Inter coach Inzaghi, however, certainly felt otherwise.
“We’re feeling bitter that we lost in this manner,” the coach said after the match.
“After the match against Monza we promised that we wouldn’t discuss referring errors anymore, because we felt that a very serious refereeing error had went against us,” he continued.
“Today, another error,” Inzaghi lamented, “a goal was allowed to stand that was unacceptable.”
“They’ve told me that there are no other images from VAR, this is a lack of respect, we demand respect,” the coach said.
“Needless to say, I’ve now seen about twenty different images of the incident.”
When it was pointed out that former referee Luca Marelli felt that whilst there was contact between the Juventus player’s arm and the ball but that it was inconclusive whether the ball should’ve been disallowed, Inzaghi said “I’ll hear out what he has to say, but the goal is unacceptable.”
“We can concede goals in error, but this I can’t accept.”
“It’s difficult for me to talk about the match itself, because that incident is too serious,” Inzaghi said.
Of the tactical side of the match, the coach said that “We’ve played many games against Juve, counterattacks are one of their main weapons.”
“As far as being prepared for that we did well, we stayed in the game.”
“We made more technical errors than usual, but this whole match is spoiled for us, it hurts us in the table and in the race for the Champions League places.”
Of the diamond-shaped midfield tested out at the end of the match, Inzaghi said that “I’ve used it on other occasions as well.”
“This time I switched to it because we were chasing the match, it’s an option we can use, but our style of play is based on the 3-5-2 shape,” the coach went on.
“We had some ideas to try and break through, but in the end we were unable to get a draw.”
