Former Inter coach Andrea Stramaccioni feels that whilst the Nerazzurri have had a disappointing season overall, the team’s exploits in the Champions League have given Simone Inzaghi hope of remaining as coach.

Speaking to the Twitch channel of Italian news outlet Calciomercato.it, via FCInterNews, the former Inter coach gave his thoughts on the current one, stressing that the European successes have been the one major point in the latter’s favour.

There is no doubt that the mediocre form in the league, which has seen Inter lose fully one third of their matches so far this season, has been a big problem for Inzaghi, and potentially serious enough to see him sacked at the end of the season.

However, the Nerazzurri’s performances in Europe have been a mirror image of their league form, and the view of former coach Stramaccioni, potentially enough to save the coach.

“There’s no doubt that the season has been disappointed, and below the level that should be expected from the squad that Simone Inzaghi has,” the former coach argued.

“In the past two seasons, Inter have won the Scudetto and lost out on a second despite pushing it all the way,” he added.

“For me, this season has fallen far short of what they’re capable of, but they’ve been kept afloat by the Champions League.”

“The two-legged tie against Benfica in the quarterfinals can, paradoxically, lend new meaning to what’s been an otherwise negative season for them,” Stramaccioni suggested.

“It’s undeniable that, by Inzaghi’s own admission, Inter have had different performances in Europe compared to those in Serie A, where they’ve looked distracted and inconsistent,” he noted.
