Inter have been in talks to sign Tigre striker Mateo Retegui for some time now, but they are wary of the possibility of competition for his signature coming from the Premier Leagues.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the possible emergence of competition for the 23-year-old’s signature from teams in the English top flight would be one of the main prospective obstacles for the Nerazzurri.

Retegui’s form for Tigre has earned him a call-up to the Italian national team, as the Argentine-born striker holds an Italian passport, and this has shone a spotlight on him.

According to the Gazzetta, however, Inter’s interest in signing the 23-year-old extends back further than this.

The Nerazzurri have been laying the groundwork for a move for a little while now, the newspaper reports.

The worry would be that if big clubs in the Premier League turn their attention to Retegui, which could happen particularly if he puts in a standout performance for the Azzurri in their EURO 2024 qualifying match against England.

If this were to happen, the price tag for Retegui would surely rise, potentially making a move to Inter difficult.
