Legendary former Inter striker Roberto Boninsegna has put his faith in the judgment of Italy and former Nerazzurri and Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini regarding young striker Mateo Retegui.

Speaking to Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, the former striker gave his thoughts on 23-year-old Retegui, who has been called up to the Italian national team and linked with Inter as well as other clubs around Europe.

Despite having been born in Argentina, Retegui is eligible to represent the Italian national team due to holding an Italian passport, and Azzurri coach Mancini has jumped at the chance by calling up the young striker.

The 23-year-old’s form for Tigre has prompted this surprise call-up, and it has also resulted in no shortage of transfer interest in him.

Reports have suggested that Inter are one of the clubs leading the charge to try and sign Retegui, whilst the fact that Inter-owned striker Facundo Colidio is currently in impressive form for Tigre on loan could give the Nerazzurri an opportunity to make a cash-plus-player offer.

“We’re in a period where Italy seems to have far more full-backs available than centre-forwards, I don’t think there’s any reason for it though,” Boninsegna observed.

Of Retegui, who has earned a call-up as Mancini has found the pool of available strikers to be light, the former Inter striker said that “I don’t know much about him, but I trust Mancini, if the Azzurri coach believes he’s ready then I think he is.”
