Inter defender Stefan de Vrij has been called up to the Dutch national team for the international break following the withdrawal of several players due to illness.

This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews, who report that the 31-year-old Nerazzurri defender will be part of the Oranje’s squad after five players had to withdraw following a viral outbreak, including defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Sven Botman.

De Vrij had not initially been called up to the squad for the EURO 2024 qualifying matches against France and Gibraltar during the break, although his Inter teammate Denzel Dumfries was.

However, a viral outbreak within the Dutch squad has seen Bayern Munich’s de Ligt and Newcastle United’s Sven Botman, as well as Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo, PSV’s Joey Veerman, and Anderlecht’s Bart Verbruggen forced to pull out with illness.

As such, Inter defender de Vrij will be called up for the qualifies.

The 31-year-old had been part of the Netherlands squad at the World Cup, but did not play during the tournament.
