Italian football agent Giocondo Martorelli believes that it was not necessarily a mistake for Inter to bring back Romelu Lukaku in the summer.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster TMW Radio, via FCInter1908, the agent suggested that the high profile “flop” signings of Lukaku by the Nerazzurri as well as Paul Pogba by Juventus were not necessarily bad moves at the time even if they look that way in hindsight.

The returns of Lukaku and Pogba to Inter and Juventus respectively were two of the most high-profile moves not just in Serie A but in all of Europe during last summer transfer window.

The pair had both left big Premier League clubs on free transfers, after spells that could generously be described as mixed in the English top flight, to re-join clubs where they had thrived in the past.

In both cases, the impact made has not been what has been expected from the returning players, although in both cases injuries have certainly played a role.

In the view of Martorelli, however, this is all hindsight.

Speaking about signings that haven’t worked out, the agent suggested that “There are two different kinds of cases, there are signings where the club misjudged on a technical level, and there are signings where the player hasn’t made the contribution expected of them for other reasons.”

“For example, Pogba and Paredes are objectively too players, nobody questions that, but for various reasons they haven’t lived up to expectations.”

“The same goes for Lukaku,” he argued. “Inter and Juve didn’t make mistakes with these signings.”
