Inter striker Romelu Lukaku’s hattrick for Belgium in a 3-0 EURO 2024 qualifying win over Sweden was a clear message to the Nerazzurri.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who suggest that the 29-year-old gave Inter something concrete to think about as far as signals that he can still return to being the striker he was a couple seasons ago.

Lukaku’s form for Inter this season has been nowhere near what had been expected from him, with the Belgian’s return one season after making the big money move to Chelsea blighted by injuries and incosnsitency.

Accordingly, it is far from clear whether or not the Nerazzurri will be convinced to extend his loan deal from the Blues at the end of the campaign.

Playing for the Belgian national team presents a different set of challenges compared to Inter, and so the hattrick against Sweden can hardly be taken as evidence that Lukaku can transfer that sort of goalscoring form to his club over the rest of the season, where the pace of play will be different.

However, the 29-year-old will have the opportunity to follow up on that statement hattrick over the remainder of the campaign with Inter fighting on all fronts.

Lukaku’s hattrick against Sweden was the kind of signal that the Belgian is ready and hungry to be given opportunities over the rest of the season at Inter, and if he is able to build on it then the Nerazzurri could finally decide to keep him next season.
