Inter target Chris Smalling wants a two-year contract extension if he is to sign a new deal with Roma.
This according to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInterNews, who report that the Giallorossi are trying to tie down the 33-year-old former Manchester United defender on a new deal, and that the duration of a prospective contract could be the key factor.
Smalling is a player who’s come onto Inter’s radar as a possible defensive reinforcement for the summer, given the uncertain future of players like Stefan de Vrij and Francesco Acerbi.
The key reason that Inter have found the Englishman on their radar is that he has not yet decided to extend his contract with Roma, which expires at the end of June as things stand.
However, the Giallorossi are determined to extend Smalling’s deal.
According to Mediaset, the key factor on the player’s end is that he be offered a new deal at similar terms to what he currently earns that would take him until the end of June 2025 instead of June 2024, per the clause in his contract that he has not yet exercised.
