Inter wingback Matteo Darmian has received praise for a reliable and steady appearance down the right flank on his return to the Italian national team.

The 33-year-old was commended for the job that he did coming off the bench for Giovanni Di Lorenzo in the second half of the Azzurri’s 2-0 EURO 2024 qualifying win over Malta yesterday in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

The qualities that led Italy coach Roberto Mancini to bring Darmian back into the national team fold after five years away were the former Manchester United man’s reliability and versatility.

These are aspects that have led Darmian to being a regular both at wingback and in defense for the Nerazzurri throughout this season, and since his arrival from Parma in the summer of 2020.

These were also what was required from the Inter wingback in the second half of yesterday’s match, coming on for Di Lorenzo as a substitute to see out the win against Malta.

From the perspective of the Gazzetta, it was hardly a sparkling performance by Darmian, but it was steady and proof that the Nerazzurri man is still a capable servant when called upon, playing his part to ensure three important points for the Azzzurri.
