Inter are targeting Tigre striker Mateo Retegui as an attacking reinforcement partly because of the fact that he is seen as both a potential backup option to Lautaro Martinez and also a partner for the 25-year-old in attack.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, who detail the Nerazzurri’s approach to how Retegui would fit into the attacking rotation were he to be signed.

As has been seen in his two appearances for the Italian national team during the break, Retegui is an out-and-out Number Nine who is at his best when he is close to goal.

This would make the 23-year-old a prospective option to deputize for Martinez, who is currently the Nerazzurri’s most reliable outlet for goals.

On the other hand, however, Martinez is also versatile enough to play as a second striker off of a true centre-forward, which is arguably where the current Inter talisman is at his best.

Accordingly, there is an idea that Retegui could also be brought in to form an attacking partnership with fellow Argentine Martinez, leading the line and allowing Martinez to play off of him.
