The rumour mill has not been quiet regarding the possibility of Antonio Conte returning to Inter now that the 53-year-old’s spell at Tottenham Hotspur has finally come to an end.

According to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, Conte would be coming back to a club where there is a lot of appreciation for his past work, but also plenty of potential pitfalls and some rifts that won’t be easy to heal.

In his previous spell in charge of Inter, Conte had two intense years which culminated in the Serie A title after 24 months of nonstop intensity and work.

On the one hand, this was appreciated by the Nerazzurri fans, who saw the former Juventus, Italy, and Chelsea coach’s passion and drive reflected on and off the pitch.

On the other, there remains a strong sense that Conte’s attitude left his relationship with Inter’s board badly burnt out, something of a theme for a coach who has just departed from Spurs in circumstances which were difficult, to put it mildly.

Moreover, the conditions that put a strain on Conte’s relationship with Inter’s directors, namely the financial restrictions imposed by owner Suning following the pandemic, have hardly gone away and have in fact gotten worse.

As such, whilst there may be some nostalgia and a hunger for the 53-year-old’s intense mentality to once again appear on the touchline for Inter, even the fans are divided on what a return would mean.

Whilst some would see Conte coming back as a vital sign of competitiveness from this Inter, many would question whether it would only mean more instability, particularly after the difficult end to an ultimately unsuccessful tenure at Spurs.
