Turkish national team coach Stefan Kuntz has confirmed that the injury problem that forced Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu to leave the pitch during the team’s loss to Croatia yesterday was a groin strain.

Speaking to Turkish broadcaster NTVSpor after the match, via FCInterNews, the coach also explained that an MRI will be needed to understand how serious the 29-year-old’s injury is.

Inter will be holding their breath regarding the condition of Calhanoglu following the midfielder’s injury yesterday.

Given that the 29-year-old is a pivotal player for the Nerazzurri in every sense, they will not be keen to miss out on him for too many matches in the run-in of the season.

The recovery time for Calhanoglu will depend on how serious the injury is, and according to Turkey coach Kuntz it was not immediately clear what the nature of the problem is.

For Inter, there will be an anxious wait to see whether the former AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen man can return relatively swiftly or if his recovery will entail a more prolonged absence.

“Calhanoglu picked up a groin strain,” Kuntz said when asked about the Nerazzurri midfielder’s substitution after the match.

“We’ll need to see an MRI to know how serious the problem is,” he added.
