Romelu Lukaku’s return to Inter on loan from Chelsea has been branded as the “flop of the season” in Serie A.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews, are unsparing in their negative assessment of the 29-year-old’s return to the Nerazzurri after yet another hapless performance while his team fell to a tenth league defeat of the season to Fiorentina.

When Lukaku returned to Inter from Chelsea last summer, the expectations of the Belgian were perhaps tempered by the fact that his time in London had been itself such a “flop.”

However, the expectation was certainly that, back at the club where he had been one of the best strikers not just in Serie A but all of Europe for two seasons, the 29-year-old would re-find a lot of his inspiration.

Instead, the Belgian has arguably been even worse this season than he was last time around in the English capital.

For a long part of the season, injuries have been an excuse for Lukaku.

However, the Belgian has been fit for some time now, and this has seemingly made little difference.

Whilst four goals in two matches during the international break had given some hope that the Belgian would be ready to make an impact for Inter with the resumption of the club season upon the Nerazzurri, that momentum certainly came to a screeching halt yesterday evening.

Whilst the 29-year-old certainly put in a shift running the channels and battling against the Fiorentina defenders, he was horribly blunt in front of goal.

A bad miss in the second half of the match brought to mind Lukaku’s infamous match for Belgian at the World Cup against Croatia.

The exact reason would be hard to pinpoint for the 29-year-old’s decline.

However, what seems obvious is that Inter have a striker on their hands who, completely the opposite to the player who was dragging the team to the Serie A title 24 months ago, looks drained of confidence and cutting edge.

For the Corriere della Sera, no player has been a bigger disappointment in Serie A this campaign.
