Former Inter President Ernesto Pellegrini still feels that Simone Inzaghi can be the man to guide the Nerazzurri out of their slump in form.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster RAI Radio, via FCInterNews, the former President backed the current President to steady the ship, even despite the team’s dreadful recent form.

Inter have endured their worst run of what has been an up-and-down season during the matches before and after the international break.

Three matches without a win prior to the break, including losses to Spezia and Juventus in the league, were followed by Saturday evening’s frustrating loss to Fiorentina.

This has led to criticism of Inzaghi and reports that he could be sacked in a little over a week if he does not turn things around.

However, for his part former President Pellegrini still backs the 46-year-old.

Asked about the possibility of a departure for Inzaghi, the former President said that “I haven’t thought about it, because I’m still counting on the current coach, I’m counting on him to get the team back on track so they can have a positive run-in in the league.”

“Now the team need to roll up their sleeves and fight through the matches that they have left,” he added.

About the possibility of Antonio Conte returning as coach, Pellegrini said that “He left, and I don’t exactly know if the circumstances were bad, but it’s not my decision to make.”

“He’s a great coach, he proved that at Juve as well as at Inter, but I don’t know if a return would be welcome or would improve the team’s fortunes.”

Of Inter’s match against Fiorentina, Pellegrini said that “It was a bad match, they were missing a goalscorer, Romelu Lukaku missed a good chance, the kind that even I could have scored from.”

“He didn’t play badly either, but you need to score to win,” he said of Lukaku.
