Inter have made initial contacts with former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino who is a candidate to replace Simone Inzaghi as coach next season.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the 51-year-old has been contacted “secretly” by the Nerazzurri, whose search for a potential successor to Inzaghi is now in full swing.
Whilst Inzaghi is hardly out the door as Inter coach just yet, the sense is that there is not much time.
The former Lazio boss could be shown the door in just over a week’s time if the next three results do not pick up from the team’s awful slump in form of late.
Meanwhile, in the longer term, the Nerazzurri will be thinking long and hard about the possibility of sacking the current coach before the start of next season, plotting a rebuild with someone different at the helm.
According to the Gazzetta, former Spurs coach Pochettino is one of the names on the Nerazzurri’s list and has already been contacted.
The Argentine has been linked with a few of Europe’s top jobs, with the Gazzetta noting that he is waiting to see whether the position of head coach of Real Madrid becomes open.
Meanwhile, the fact that Chelsea have made the sacking of Graham Potter as coach official means that there is room for a return to managing one of the Premier League’s top teams.
However, Inter are also ready to throw their hat into the ring.
The Gazzetta report that the Nerazzurri have already made their initial contacts with Pochettino and his representatives behind the scenes.
There would be the question of whether the Argentine, who has been lauded for his long-term projects at Espanyol and Spurs as well as the job he did at Southampton, would want to take over an Inter team who are struggling financially and in need of a long-term rebuild.
Moreover, the matter of whether or not the Nerazzurri qualify for the Champions League next season is always likely to be crucial.
