Racist chants aimed at Inter striker Romelu Lukaku were recorded coming from Juventus supporters during the aftermath of the Nerazzurri striker’s late goal against the Bianconeri in a 1-1 Coppa Italia draw this evening.

This according to a report in Italian news outlet FCInterNews, who report that there is video recording of some Bianconeri fans making “monkey” chants after the Belgian scored from the penalty spot, and that the relevant authorities will look into the incident to see what punishments will be handed out.

Lukaku scored from the spot following a Bremer handball, in what was already a very dramatic finale to this evening’s Coppa Italia semifinal first leg clash at the Allianz Stadium in Turin.

However, things turned sour after the 29-year-old celebrated in front of the Curva Nord where the Bianconeri’s ultras sit, making a “silencing the crowd” gesture to celebrate the late equalizer.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi defended the striker’s celebration by noting that it is the same way he always celebrates goals, but this was not the way that the celebration was seen by the officials.

Referee Davide Massa booked the Nerazzurri striker, and considering that he had already received an earlier yellow card for a challenge on Bianconeri defender Federico Gatti, it meant that he was given his marching orders.

This sparked a massive confrontation between both sets of players, and when all was said and done both Inter captain Samir Handanovic and Juventus wingback Juan Cuadrado were also shown straight red cards.

Amid the chaos, there were also profoundly regrettable scenes recorded in the stands, as a group of Juventus ultras could be clearly heard making “monkey” chants in the direction of Lukaku following the Inter striker’s goal.

Chants of this nature are among the most common racist chants aimed at Black footballers, and there is little ambiguity regarding the intentions of the fans responsible.

Now, it will remain to be seen what comes of an inevitable investigation into the chants, as the authorities have one more sordid aspect of the mess that this evening’s match ended up breaking down into to sort out.
