Legendary former Inter striker Sandro Mazzola feels that Simone Inzaghi should continue to be backed as head coach.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster RAI Radio, via FCInterNews, the former striker also defended the decision of referee Davide Massa to send current Nerazzurri striker Romelu Lukaku off by giving the Belgian a second yellow for a celebration against Juventus yesterday evening.

Inzaghi’s future has been the subject of massive debate over the past couple of days.

It has been reported that the 46-year-old may only have a few matches in which to save his job, whilst even if he is to stay on until the end of the season it is far from clear whether or not he will remain Nerazzurri boss past the end of the campaign.

For his part, however, Mazzola feels that there is also some blame to be put on the players for not really understanding what the former Lazio coach wants from them.

“I wouldn’t touch Inzaghi, he has to stay, he’s doing a good job and we should just give him time to work,” the former striker argued.

“It’s the players, or rather some of them, who don’t seem to understand what the coach wants,” he continued.

“Not even I really understand the style of play that Inter are trying to play,” he added.

And regarding the controversial ending to yesterday evening’s Coppa Italia semifinal first leg between Inter and Juventus, Mazzola said that “I never like to see brawls and sendings-off, but I hate to say it, the sending-off of Lukaku was correct.”

Mazzola then noted that “There are young boys watching, and so I think that some kinds of gestures shouldn’t ever be made, we need to be more relaxed.”

Of the match overall, the former striker noted that “I sometimes had to turn my TV off and then turn it back on again.”
