Inter striker Lautaro Martinez could be given a rest during tomorrow evening’s Serie A match away to Salernitana.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Argentine could drop to the bench in tomorrow evening’s match, as he is beginning to feel the constant matches which have led to a goal drought.
Whilst Martinez had arguably been Inter’s outstanding player during a run of matches between January and February, with eight goals and assist over thirteen matches played, his form has tailed off badly in the last month or so.
The Argentine had seemingly come back from the World Cup fired up after winning the tournament with his national team, but now has started to run out of energy.
The 25-year-old has now gone seven matches without a goal, and the Nerazzurri will need his goal drought to end if they’re going to put their recent finishing woes behind them.
In the meantime, Romelu Lukaku has been getting closer and closer to his best form and fitness.
Martinez was named as Inter’s worst player in Tuesday’s 1-1 Coppa Italia semifinal first leg draw against Juventus, with the striker’s performance described as “dreadful,” an indication of his recent struggles.
The Argentine has looked “spent” in the view of the Gazzetta, who suggest that his recent performances have seen him late to arrive in the penalty area compared to a few weeks ago, and not quite possessing the same energy to constantly involve himself in the team’s attacking play.
Accordingly, Martinez’s legs could be spared tomorrow.
According to the Gazzetta, the Argentine striker is likely to be on the bench for the start of tomorrow’s match at the Arechi.
In his place, the newspaper anticipates that Joaquin Correa will start alongside Romelu Lukaku as he had done against Fiorentina over the weekend.
