Salernitana midfielder Antonio Candreva makes no attempt to hide the fact that his late equalizer against Inter was intended as a cross rather than a long distance shot.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN following the 1-1 draw at the Stadio Arechi, via FCInterNews, the 36-year-old reacted to the match and talked about his late goal which looked like a slightly overhit cross and real time, and by his own admission was exactly that.

Salernitana kept pushing to equalize at the Arechi the longer the match went on without Inter scoring a crucial second goal.

The Granata even hit the post as they kept pushing and looking for opportunities, particularly on the counterattack.

The Nerazzurri may not have imagined that there was too much danger when Candreva received the ball wide on the right, with the Inter defenders well positioned to deal with any danger that might be posed by a high cross being swung in.

However, Candreva tried his luck, and his ball in proved to be more telling than perhaps even he could have expected.

The Salernitana players in the box barely reacted after it looked as though the flight of the ball would make it too difficult for any of them to attack, but crucially, Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana was also a bit deceived by Candreva’s cross in.

The former Nerazzurri and Lazio man’s cross sailed just over the outstretched hand of the Cameroonian, but under the crossbar, to find the back of the net, and punish Inter for their wasteful performance at the other end.

After the match, Candreva commented that “It was meant as a cross, but sometimes you need a bit of luck.”

And of the match overall and his team’s performance, Candreva said that “We weren’t satisfied with how we played in the first half, but then in the second we put in a great performance against a great team.”
