Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi is hoping that his team can bounce back from yet another disappointing setback in Serie A when they face Benfica in the Champions League next week.

Speaking to InterTV following the Nerazzurri’s 1-1 draw away to Salernitana, via FCInterNews, the coach stressed that the team cannot afford to dwell on their disappointment, and that they must seek to put it in the past with a performance and result against Benfica.

Inter will be wondering how they let two points slip through their fingers against Salernitana this afternoon, as a profligate attacking performance and a fluke late goal from Antonio Candreva saw them have to settle for a draw in a match where three points were imperative.

This has been the story for Inzaghi’s team recently, but from his perspective the only thing there is for them to do is to look forward and try to immediately put it in the past.

“Clearly this is not an easy result to comment on,” the coach rued, “the only thing we have to look at is the performance.”

The 47-year-old defended his team’s performance, arguing that “From the way that we played, we deserved a different result, but we have to keep working harder.”

Asked if he thinks that there’s still life in his team despite another disappointing result, Inzaghi responded “Absolutely, the guys put in a massive effort.”

“We had just two days for the match and we still did the impossible, but the second goal never came and then we conceded from a freak goal,” the coach defended his team.

“We’re sorry to only be able to go home with one point after a match in which we did what seemed impossible,” he added.

And looking ahead to Tuesday evening’s Champions League quarterfinal first leg match against Benfica, Inzaghi said that “We have to put this massive disappointment behind us.”

“This is how things are going in the league, but now we’re facing a top side in the Champions League, and we have a semifinal at stake,” he added.
