The rising price tag of Tigre and Italy striker Mateo Retegui could be a major problem for Inter in their quest to sign him.

This according to Italian news outlet Calciomercato.com, who report that the Nerazzurri could find the now €20 million price tag for the 23-year-old to be an issue given that they are as of yet unsure whether or not they will have the revenues from Champions League football next season.

Retegui has come onto Inter’s radar as well as those of a number of other clubs in Serie A and around Europe with his blazing form in the Italian top flight and especially since making his debut for the Italian national team for whom he scored twice in two matches.

Gianluca Di Marzio has reported that this form and the accompanying interest has seen the asking price for Retegui rise to no less than €20 million, and Calciomercato confirm that this is the case.

This would be no small amount for the Nerazzurri in any event, but particularly if they are to miss out on Champions League football for next season, they could find it all but impossible to sign the young Azzurri star.

Inter are fighting to regain their place in the top four of the Serie A, and CEO Beppe Marotta has all but confirmed that the club’s strategy will not really be firmed up until they know whether or not they will be able to count on the revenues from the Champions League.

It is true that by offering striker Facundo Colidio, currently on loan at Tigre, as part of a cash-plus-player deal, Inter could bring down the asking price for Retegui.

However, the fact remains that, particularly without the revenues from Champions League football, Inter would have to think long and hard before investing in a move for the 23-year-old.
