Inter striker Romelu Lukaku believes that the Nerazzurri could have scored even more goals than they did in their win over Benfica in the Champions League quarterfinal first leg this evening.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset after the match, via FCInterNews, the 29-year-old suggested that the Nerazzurri could have scored three or four rather than just the two that they did, but that the win that they got was still a good result.

Lukaku scored from the penalty spot late on to put the seal on a win on the night after Nicolo Barella had put the Nerazzurri ahead earlier on in the half.

Combined with yet another clean sheet in the Champions League, these two goals give Inter a real advantage heading into the second leg of the quarterfinal tie at the San Siro in a week’s time.

It’s certainly true that nothing is done just yet, but the result will be a boost and something tangible to hold onto next Wednesday in Milano.

“We played an intelligent match this evening,” Lukaku said after the match at the Estadio da Luz, “we could’ve even scored 3-4 goals.”

“Still, 2-0 is a good result,” the Belgian continued, “now we have to follow this up, including in the league.”

Of his penalty goal to seal the win, Lukaku said that “Penalties are all about the mind, concentration – I don’t listen to anyone, not even my teammates.”

Asked if he feels that he is starting to show up in big matches after a disappointing first part of the campaign, the 29-year-old said that “I understand their reasons for my past performances.”

“Now I help the team in every way, I’m starting to get back into my best shape,” he added.

“We have a responsibility to do well for this club, now we have to go on and have a great match against Monza,” Lukaku concluded.
