Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has hailed his team’s unity and intensity in their 2-0 Champions League win over Benfica yesterday evening.
Speaking to InterTV after the quarterfinal first leg win at the Estadio da Luz, via FCInterNews, the coach stressed that now the team must follow yesterday’s victory up with a similar performance in the second leg in order to get the job done.
Inter got one of the most important results of their season to date by beating high-flying Benfica 2-0 away in Lisbon.
The tie is still only half over, but the Nerazzurri put in a convincing display which gives them an advantage to hold onto when the second leg of the tie at the San Siro arrives in a weeks’ time.
Inzaghi gave the view that “The key to the win was unity.”
“We had a great match,” the Nerazzurri coach went on.
“We’re enjoying this evening, but it’s only the first leg,” he added, “they’re a great team, in eight days we’ll be in for a very tough match at the San Siro.”
The coach continued by stressing that there is a lot of work to do, noting that “It’s an important result and gives us an advantage, but we saw what they did against Juve and PSG.”
“We have to repeat this performance in the second leg,” he added.
Inzaghi said of his team’s performance that “We played a match with both our hearts and minds, which was what I asked for.”
“We have a good lead now, but it will be a tough leg in the return leg,” he added.
The Inter coach noted that, prior to yesterday, “Benfica had never lost in the Champions League, but the guys played a great match.”
“It will take another 95 minutes at this intensity if we’re to reach the semifinals,” he stressed.
