Inter coach Simone Inzaghi feels that no team in Italy is currently dealing with the kind of exhausting fixture list that the Nerazzurri are.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after his team’s 2-0 Champions League win over Benfica, via FCInterNews, the coach noted that the Nerazzurri have now played four matches in all competitions in just over a week.

It was only at the start of this month that Inter made their return to action from the international break.

However, that period has seen the team virtually go into crisis mode with a loss against Fiorentina and draw with Salernitana in Serie A, and then emerge with a statement win against Benfica in the Champions League quarterfinal first leg.

Sandwiched between all of that was a gruelling 1-1 draw away to Juventus in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semifinals, a match which ended in controversy and an all-out brawl.

From Inzaghi’s perspective, it is little wonder that this intense schedule is starting to wear down his team.

“We’re on our fourth match in just a few days, it’s an insane schedule,” the 47-year-old said after yesterday’s match at the Estadio da Luz.

“We’re the only team in Italy to have a fixture list like this, although we can’t let it be an excuse,” he added.

“The guys always give everything, we have to always try to be better.”

Of recent results, Inzaghi said that “We didn’t win against Fiorentina, Juve, or Salernitana, but sometimes we have to leave the result aside and clearly look at things.”

“We would have deserved more, but that just means we had to do more.”

Of the win over Benfica, the coach said that “We’ve taken an important step, but in one week there will be another battle.”

Of the Nerazzurri’s team spirit, Inzaghi said that “In football you always have to stay united.” .
