Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana has had a stellar Champions League campaign this season, so much so that he is statistically the most impressive goalkeeper in the entire competition.

This is highlighted by football statistics account Opta, who note that the Cameroonian’s save percentage of 84.8% of all the shots that he has faced so far in Europe has him ahead of every other player in his position who’s made at least five appearances in the competition.

Whilst Andre Onana did not come right into Inter’s starting eleven and displace Samir Handanovic upon his arrival from Ajax during the summer transfer window, it only took him a couple of months.

The 27-year-old had made his first starting appearance in the Champions League, debuting for the Nerazzzurri in a competitive match in their group stage opener against Bayern Munich at the San Siro.

Whilst Inter conceded two goals in that match, the blame was hardly put on Onana who rather had an excellent match making his first ever competitive start for the club in the toughest of matches.

It didn’t take long for the Cameroonian to cement himself as Inter’s first-choice keeper in Serie A as well, where he has been praised for his displays.

However, it has been in the first competition that he played for the Nerazzurri that Onana has produced his very best.

Three clean sheets from three mean that the Cameroonian has not conceded a goal in the knockout rounds to date.

Whilst a lot of credit also must go to the team’s defense as a whole and to coach Simone Inzaghi, plenty of it is down to the fact that the former Ajax keeper has been in such outstanding form to keep out those shots which have been on target.

Opta noted that “André Onana is the goalkeeper with the most saves (39) and the most clean sheets (6) in this Champions League. Onana saved 84.8% of shots, the highest percentage in this edition (min. 5 appearances). Shutter.”
