Inter’s attack is no longer just enduring a slight drop-off in Serie A, but with just ten goals scored in the last twelve matches in the league, it is in the midst of a full-blown collapse.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who note that it is now not just one or two strikers who aren’t in form, but all four of them.
Over the first eighteen matches of their season, Inter certainly did not find scoring goals to be a problem.
A total of 38 meant that the Nerazzurri were finding the back of the net at a rate of 2.1 times per match, meaning that even if the defense could be a bit leaky at times, there was little trouble in picking up points from the more “winnable” matches.
Over the past few months, though, things have taken a drastic turn for the worse in terms of Inter’s attacking output.
Inter have seen matches against the likes of Empoli, Sampdoria, Bologna, Juventus, Fiorentina, and last night Monza pass by without scoring a single goal.
Moreover, whilst the Nerazzurri were able to find the back of the net against Spezia and Salernitana, the feeling in those matches was that it was not a great reward for the amount of possession that the team had, leading to some very damaging dropped points.
From the perspective of the Gazzetta, it is no longer the case that one striker’s bad misses or lack of incision can be blamed for this awful run – it is all four.
Romelu Lukaku has continued to search in vain for a goal from open play in the league, whilst Edin Dzeko has now gone months without a goal in any competition.
Lautaro Martinez, who had been so key for the team in the final team during his blistering run of form after the World Cup, has been enduring a goal drought of his own, something which has become an alarming feature of the Argentine’s game.
Lastly, Joaquin Correa has continued to show why so many regard him as a flop signing, as the former Lazio man has constantly looked to be overcomplicating things in the final third without having a nose for goal.
Combined with the fact that no one else in the team seems interested in making a goalscoring impact, the cumulative effect of these four striker’s dreadful form has been a collapse that has left Inter’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League via a top four spot hanging on by a thread.
