Inter coach Simone Inzaghi still finds himself “on trial” at the Nerazzurri, with each league defeat that the team suffers ratcheting up the pressure.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews, who argue that far from being well-established in his position, the 47-year-old’s future well and truly hangs in the balance.

When Inter decided to extend Inzaghi’s contract from the end of this June to the end of June 2024 last summer, it was a show of faith based on a first season where even with a failure to win the Serie A title, there was a broadly positive perception of the former Lazio coach’s work at the club.

Accordingly, the coach came into this season with a fair bit of good will behind him.

One or two bumps in the road were never likely to see this credit exhausted, but it has not just been one or two setbacks for the Nerazzurri this season.

Eleven league defeats is seven more than than Inter had racked up through the entirety of last season, and it has become for the club not to seriously consider whether the coach deserves any more latitude.

Particularly in recent weeks, the losses in Serie A have accumulated at a rate which has made it impossible for Inzaghi to react to fast enough, as bad results now outnumber good ones.

The concrete reality is that even if the coach can point to excuses for the results, or to good work being done behind the scenes, it is no longer a matter of just being out of the title race for Inter.

The Nerazzurri’s hopes of finishing in the top four of the league table are now hanging on by a thread, and this above all is reason for the biggest test yet of the club directors’ faith in their coach.
