Inter are considering taking the drastic step of offering the squad a cash bonus incentive for qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the idea of a financial incentive is one of the ideas being weighed up as the Nerazzurri directors look for ways to guide the team out of their current crisis.
There is no disguising the fact that Inter’s season is now under threat of going completely off the rails.
Whilst the failure to really push Napoli for the Serie A title was a disappointment, it was not really a calamity that threatened the stability of the team moving forward.
However, the prospective failure to finish in the top four of the league table would be just such a catastrophic event in the Nerazzurri’s season.
It’s no secret that without the revenues that would come from participation in Europe’s top club competition, Inter’s financial plans would be radically altered.
As such, the fact that Inter now sit outside of the top four spots in the Serie A table with just eight matches left to go has left the club directors scrambling to find a way to right the ship.
According to thew Gazzetta, the directors’ crisis talks with coach Simone Inzaghi in the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s shock defeat against Monza lasted well after midnight.
The feeling now is that absolutely all options have to be considered to try and reverse this situation.
The fact that the players have seemingly been unable to muster the same kind of motivation playing in league matches as they have done in big European matches in recent weeks has not gone unnoticed.
Accordingly, the Gazzetta reports, the Nerazzurri directors are seriously considering the possibility of offering a cash bonus incentive to try and get the players focused in league matches against “weaker” sides, which have become their Achilles’ heel in recent weeks.
