Inter have marked out Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram as their top target to replace Romelu Lukaku during the summer transfer window.

This according to Italian broadcaster Calciomercato.com, who report that the Nerazzurri are set to step up their efforts to sign the 25-year-old French international now that it looks likely than ever that Lukaku’s loan from Chelsea will be extended.

It not looks as though Inter have made their decision that Lukaku will not stay past the end of the season when his loan from Chelsea expires.

Accordingly, there will be slot that opens up in the Nerazzurri’s attack, and the club will look to fill it with a player who has been on their radar for some time.

Thuram had already been lined up by Inter once in the past specifically to replace Lukaku, when the Belgian initially made the move to Chelsea during the summer of 2021.

The Nerazzurri were reportedly one step away from signing Thuram in a deal worth €25 million, but then a knee injury to the player ended up putting a stop to the deal.

Inter never really stopped in their interest in signing the Frenchman, however, and the fact that he will be available on a free transfer this summer when his contract with Gladbach runs out at the end of June certainly makes him an especially enticing prospect.

There is the fact that the 25-year-old has a number of other suitors to contend with, and this is certainly an obstacle for the Nerazzurri.

However, Nerazzurri Sporting Director Piero Ausilio has long considered Thuram to be a major target in attack, and has been looking for a strategy with which to pursue the French World Cup runner-up.

With Lukaku now set to leave at the end of the summer, there will be a big vacancy to fill, and the Inter executive is thinking about this as an ideal opportunity to stage a move for Thuram during the summer.
