Inter Vice-President Javier Zanetti does not hide the fact that the Nerazzurri’s performances have not been up to the level that they should be considering the strength of the team.

Speaking to Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica, via FCInterNews, the Nerazzurri executive gave his reaction to the team’s recent performances, which have been nowhere near expectations.

On paper, Inter were considered to be among the main contenders for the Serie A title at the start of the season.

Instead, the team have lost more than a third of their matches in the league to date, leaving their qualification for next season’s Champions League via a top four finish very much hanging in the balance.

This is a tough pill for the team to swallow given the undoubted quality that their squad possesses.

For his part, Nerazzurri Vice-President Zanetti has freely admitted the fact that the team has hardly been good enough this season, particularly in recent weeks.

The Argentine knows better than almost anyone what it means to represent Inter, having captained the team and made nearly a thousand appearances during his playing days before taking on a role as a club director.

For his part, Zanetti is willing to face the fact that the team haven’t been good enough.

However, the Vice-President was also keen to reiterate that the club continue to give their full backing to coach Simone Inzaghi even in spite of how bad the performances have gotten.

“Inter are a strong team, and these performances are unacceptable,” he admitted.

“But the team are still with Simone Inzaghi,” the Nerazzurri Vice-President added.

Regarding this Wednesday’s Champions League quarterfinal second leg match against Benfica, Zanetti said that “It will be a match that’s important for determining the future.”

And regarding the form of striker Romelu Lukaku, he said that “He’s still paying for his long injuries.”
