Former Inter defender Daniele Adani feels that whilst AC Milan can point to some legitimate excuses for their erratic league form, the Nerazzurri have fewer explanations.

Speaking on Christian Vieri’s Twitch channel, via FCInterNews, the former defender argued that a lack of squad depth in particular is a valid excuse for Milan’s struggles as defending champions, whilst for Inter there is no such excuse.

Neither of Inter or Milan have had the kinds of seasons that will have been expected of them.

After finishing last season in the top two spots in the Serie A table, the Milanese clubs now sit fourth and fifth, with the teams from Rome and imperious Napoli leaving them in their dust.

For Inter, the horrid run that they’ve been on in the last five matches has pegged them back, whilst the Rossoneri had a similarly woeful spell in January and February, losing 4-0 against Lazio and 5-2 against Sassuolo.

In truth, however, neither of the city rivals (who, it should be said, are on track to meet in a Champions League semifinal tie) have ever really put together a consistent run of results in the league.

Meanwhile, there is also Juventus, who while they have played better than their place in the table would suggest given the fifteen-point deduction handed to them for off-the-pitch issues, have hardly pushed for the title as had been expected based on their squad.

Looking at the trio, Adani argued that “Milan have excuses, they don’t have many options on the bench, they were forced to play half the season without their starting keeper Maignan, they lost Kalulu who had been one of their better players.”

“In my opinion, they can point to extenuating circumstances,” the former defender argued.

“Inter and Juve have no excuse for the kind of season they’re having,” he added.
