Inter defender Matteo Darmian feels that it would be a big mistake for the Nerazzurri to have their two-goal first leg advantage against Benfica in the Champions League in their minds in tomorrow’s second leg clash.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInterNews, the 33-year-old stressed the importance of taking nothing for granted as the Nerazzurri try to see out their quarterfinal tie against the Portuguese league leaders at the San Siro.

Inter could be tempted to think that they’ve done part of the job in their quarterfinal tie against Benfica by winning 2-0 in the second leg, particularly given that they play the return leg at the San Siro.

However, the truth is that there is still a very long way to go, and it is against a team who have proven throughout this season that they can go toe-to-toe with anyone.

Accordingly, the Nerazzurri will be very much keen to make sure that they keep their focus on keeping the Portuguese league leaders at bay proactively, and don’t simply sit on their lead in the hopes that it is enough to see out the entire tie.

“We have to take the p[itch with the right attitude,” Darmian said of the Nerazzurri’s approach, “without thinking that we have an advantage, that would be a big mistake.”

“We have to play our game as we did in the first leg, and try to get through to the next round.”

Then, when the Nerazzurri defender was asked about the potential dangers of the match, he said that “If we underestimate their commitment, we’re making a big mistake.”

“Benfica have great quality, they’ve shown it throughout the season,” he added.

“We’ll have to be careful, try to limit them and play our game.”

Of bouncing back from some awful form in the league, Darmian said that “We have to think about the Champions League tomorrow without thinking about what happened in the league, where we’re not in good form at the moment.”

“We’ll think about Benfica for the next 24 hours, then we’ll think about Serie A from Thursday onwards.”
