Inter coach Simone Inzaghi expects to make a choice on whether or not to use midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu against Benfica over the coming hours.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInterNews, the coach explained that the 29-year-old is looking in good form in training, but that he has not yet made up his mind regarding whether he’ll play in the Champions League quarterfinal second leg.

Calhanoglu is now back fit, having come on during the second half of Inter’s Serie A match against Monza over the weekend.

The Turk’s return to fitness is a big boost for Inzaghi and for the Nerazzurri, considering both how vital he has become in midfield this season, and the fact that the whole squad will need to be called into action in this hectic portion of the fixture calendar.

Inzaghi updated on the likelihood of the former AC Milan man starting against Portuguese league leaders Benfica tomorrow, stating that “We’ll evaluate it, he played 25 minutes against Monza – he did well and gave a great response.”

“I’ll choose the starting after today’s training session and then tomorrow morning,” the coach continued.

Looking ahead to tomorrow evening’s match, Inzaghi said that “We know that tomorrow we play the second half of a tie in which we begin with an advantage from the first leg.”

“We’ll have to stay switched on and have intensity to cover every inch of the pitch, running as a unit because we’re up against a team of top quality,” he added.

Asked if he thinks that the discrepancy between Inter’s form in Europe and then in Serie A is “paradoxical” the coach said “Absolutely, yes, but it’s useless to think about the past.”

“We know we’re not doing well in the league, but now we need to focus on Benfica, and on this opportunity to reach the final four in Europe, which would be a huge achievement.”
