Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana has admitted that his first ever start for the Nerazzurri felt like a “dream come true” and was an incredibly happy moment for him.

Speaking on the club’s official YouTube channel, via FCInterNews, the Cameroonian looked back on his first ever start for Inter and what it meant to him.

Onana joined Inter from Ajax last summer, with the 27-year-old having been marked out as the long-term successor to Samir Handanovic in the Nerazzurri goal.

The club put a lot of faith in Onana, and the task of replacing a player like Handanovic was always likely to come with a lot of pressure.

However, the Cameroonian has shown that he is up to the task, quickly settling in and proving his suitability for the role of number one goalkeeper at Inter.

The process of acclimation was fairly quick for Onana, although it was not quite instantaneous as for the first few weeks of the season Handanovic retained his starting place.

However, Onana was given a starting chance against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, and he didn’t look back from there, playing every minute in that competition so far and also quickly making the starting spot his own in Serie A as well.

“I was overjoyed,” the 27-year-old said of his first ever competitive start for the Nerazzurri, “we were playing against Bayern.”

“We lost 2-0, but I was happy to have played for such a big club at this level which was like a dream come true,” he added.

Asked who his footballing idol is, Onana said “Good question. Growing up in Cameroon, I always thought Roger Milla was the best in the world.”

“We have a great relationship,” he said of the iconic former Cameroon and Montpellier forward, “he helped me a lot when I came into the national team. So I’ll choose him.”
