Inter striker Lautaro Martinez believes that Inter have every right to dream of winning the Champions League.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Amazon Prime, via FCInterNews, the 25-year-old stressed that at this point there is no point hiding their ambitions in the competition and really going for it now that the Nerazzurri are set for a semifinal.
Inter ended up drawing 3-3 against Benfica in a wild match which saw the Portuguese league leaders pull two goals back at a point when the tie was already all but over on aggregate, with the Nerazzurri having at one point been 5-1 up on aggregate.
The scoreline won’t matter so much, however, as Inter’s advantage from the first leg meant that a draw was enough to see them through to the semifinal stage, where they will meet city rivals AC Milan.
This marks yet another step in Inter’s European adventure this season, which has already seen them eliminate Barcelona and Porto as well.
Coming up against the Rossoneri in a two-legged semifinal tie will not be easy, and facing one of Manchester City or Real Madrid in the final of the competition certainly won’t be.
However, the Nerazzurri are potentially three matches away from glory at this point, and the only thing for them to do is go into them with every intent of winning.
Of what playing a two-legged Milan derby in the semifinals will represent, Martinez said that “It will be a special match, we know what it means.”
Asked if he believes that he can win both the World Cup and the Champions League this season, Martinez said that “I play football to win, though for now we’re just happy to be in the semifinals.”
“Now focused on the league, we have points that we need to make up, then we’ll think about the Champions League,” he added.
The Argentine said that it’s a source of “Happiness and pride to represent this great club.”
“I’m very happy for my family, and I send a big hug to my brother who’s currently suffering from a knee injury, that goal is for him,” the 25-year-old said of his second-half goal.
