Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries believes that he and his teammates will have to “take a look in the mirror” after losing eleven of their matches in Serie A so far this season.
Speaking to US broadcaster CBS Sports, via FCInter1908, the Dutchman emphasized that the Nerazzurri are a team with too much quality to be having results like the ones they have been, whilst he also reacted to the Nerazzurri’s 3-3 draw against Benfica in the Champions League.
Whilst the atmosphere at Inter has gotten a big lift by the knowledge that they’ll be in the final four of the Champions League where they’ll face city rivals AC Milan, there is no ignoring the fact that in the league the team are struggling badly.
The eleven losses out of their first thirty matches played, in addition to three draws, are a far cry from what will have been expected from a team who had been tipped by many to be among the main favourites to lift the Scudetto at the end of the season.
“The league has been difficult, but we can do much, much better,” Dumfries said, “that’s a fact.”
“With a team as strong as the one we have, it shouldn’t be possible to lose eleven matches,” he added, “we have to take a look in the mirror given that.”
“We’re doing well in the Champions League but it’s bad that we’ve lost eleven matches,” he continued, “but I’m a player who always looks ahead, and the thing the most important is to come back strong in the league starting from next weekend, that’s the only way we can have a positive finish.”
Of yesterday evening’s draw with Benfica, Dumfries said that “Against Benfica I had to play a more defensive game than usual due to the quality they have, they’re an excellent team with the ball – the first task was to defend, that was our priority.”
Asked if Inter can be compared with other top sides in Europe, the Dutchman said that “It’s different, the Italian teams are more focused on tactics, I think Italy is the country with the most tactical football, it’s different from the English style.”
“But in Italy we have very strong teams, there are two in the semifinals, that shows that our league is strong.”
“The coach told us to pass the ball, and that’s what we did,” Dumfries added.
