Inter could avoid having to sell a big name player during the summer transfer window thanks to having reached the semifinal stage of the Champions League, but only if they qualify for next season’s edition of the competition.
This according to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, who report that the financial windfall that the Nerazzurri would gain both from UEFA revenues and also from the gate receipt earnings from the San Siro based on reaching the next round of the competition could be enough to meet financial targets for the fiscal year.
It has been widely reported for some time that Inter will in all likelihood have to consider selling one of their biggest name players during the upcoming summer transfer window.
This is the result of a need to meet ambitious financial targets, which are based on the need to repay the club’s massive debt burden.
However, the club would not have expected to have gone as far as they have done in the Champions League this season, and certainly did not include the presumption that they would do so in their budget.
As such, even the revenues from playing in the round of sixteen and the quarterfinals of the competition were not necessarily expected, whilst the semifinals means an additional €25 million in revenues, the Gazzetta notes.
First, there is the payment of €12.5 million that UEFA will guarantee all four teams participating in that stage of the competition next season.
Then, there is the share of the market pool for Italian teams that the Nerazzurri will be entitled to, and will be quite a bit higher than it was last season due to the presence of both of Inter and AC Milan in the semifinal stage of the competition.
Finally, the Gazzetta notes, there is the extra home match played at the San Siro, which will certainly guarantee sizable earnings in the form of gate receipts.
The gate receipt for yesterday evening’s match against Benfica was €8.2 million, the Gazzetta notes, and a similar amount is likely to be earned from the “home” match at the San Siro of the team’s two-legged semifinal tie against the Rossoneri.
All of this, however, would be entirely contingent on the team qualifying for next season’s edition of the Champions League, as the revenues from the group stage of the competition next season are certainly something that Inter have budgeted for.
Given that Inter are currently outside the top four in the Serie A table, whilst winning the Champions League would still be a massive undertaking even if it now feels well within reach, there is hardly a guarantee that Inter will be playing Champions League football next season.
Should the Nerazzurri miss out on qualification, the Gazzetta notes, then it would be much more likely that a big name player will have to be sold during the summer window to make up for the loss of revenues compared to expectations.
