Inter Milan have reached the Champions League semifinal for the first time since 2010 after a 3-3 draw against Benfica where the defence was poor but the attack was good, something that is reflected in the SempreInter.com Inter Milan player ratings.

The Nerazzurri started the game well and in control and deservedly took the lead after a wonderful screamer into the top corner by Nicolo Barella, with his weaker left foot.

Benfica looked spent and confused as Inter were in control. That is until unnecessarily the entire Inter defence went walkabout allowing Fredrik Aursnes to equalize in the 38th minute.

In the second half, Benfica started much better and Inter looked nervous yet managed to control proceedings. Benfica’s press wore off and immediately the Nerazzurri capitalized when Lautaro Martinez ended his goal-drought to cap-off an overall very good performance to give Inter the lead in the 65th minute.

Some 13 minutes later substitute Joaquin Correa made it 3-1 after some brilliant individual skill to kill off Benfica’s hopes.

Unfortunately, after this goal the Nerazzurri completely switched off allowing Benfica to pull one back as well as equalize 3-3 via first Antonio Silva and then Petar Musa.

One of Inter Milan or AC Milan will play in the Champions League final.

Inter Milan Player Ratings Vs Benfica

André Onana – 5,5: Nothing he could do on the first goal, but conceded two more in the dying minutes of the match. Luckily, the tie was essentially already over.

Matteo Darmian – 6: Standard quality performance today. Won several duels, as well as making key recoveries and interceptions. Has been a fine replacement as a right-sided centerback.

Francesco Acerbi – 5,5: Got mixed up on the first goal and left his man open to draw the score level just before half. Looked fine other than one lapse in concentration.

Alessandro Bastoni – 6: Sent several dangerous long-balls, mimicking the one that earned him an assist in the first leg. Was solid in defence and was an attacking outlet.

Denzel Dumfries – 5: Struggled to put in quality crosses and attacking passes into the opposing box. Was slightly better in defence, but not by much.

Nicolo Barella – 8 (MOTM): Opened the score with a world-class strike, quieting critics who said he wasn’t performing well this season. Two goals in two quarter-final legs.

Marcelo Brozovic – 5,5: One of his worst matches this season. Did not seem himself and lacked concentration and quality tonight. Nearly gifted Benfica a goal towards the end.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 6,5: Underrated performance tonight, was quick and spry on the counter, always pushing himself and never seeming to tire out. Was everywhere in midfield.

Federico Dimarco – 7: Two assists and what a performance. Helped Lautaro finish off a stunning team goal as well as providing the assist for Correa. Fantastic match on the left.

Lautaro Martinez – 7,5: Showed up when his team needed him most, finally. Scored a goal from open play and seemed much more confident in front of net tonight. UEFA’s MOTM.

Edin Dzeko – 5,5: Not the match for him to start in, but considering the form of other forwards at the club, he is not to blame. Struggled heavily today and looked past it.

Substitutes:

Hakan Calhanoglu – 6: Replaced Nicolo Barella ini the 76′ minute and wanted to help the team retain their lead. Was not involved much but did the job he was asked to do.

Joaquin Correa – 6,5: Brought on in the 76′ minute for Lautaro Martinez and scored an incredible goal to essentially put the match to bed. Has looked much better recently.

Romelu Lukaku – 5,5: Substituted on for Edin Dzeko in the 76′ and had basically no impact. Four touches in fourteen minutes of play, not his best outing.

Danilo D’Ambrosio – N/A: Came on in the 80′ minute for Alessandro Bastoni. Did not play enough to be able to be rated.

Robin Gosens – N/A: Entered in the 80′ minute for Federico Dimarco. Did not play enough to be able to be rated.

Manager

Simone Inzaghi – 6,5: Put out a strong lineup and scored early goals to increase Inter’s aggregate lead. His fantasy UCL-run continues, and there are no complaints about that.

Referee

Carlos Del Cerro Grande – 6: Did well throughout the entire match, getting every major decision right. Maybe should’ve given Benfica a penalty but far from a mistake not to.

Team Performance

Inter – 6,5: Forwards finally scored not one but two goals in one match from open play. Champions League semifinalists for the first time since 2010!
