Inter striker Lautaro Martinez wants the same kind of performances from the Nerazzurri in Serie A as they’ve shown in the Champions League this season.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, the Argentine stressed the importance of playing at the same level in the league as they did yesterday evening against Benfica to try and get their league campaign back on track.
In Europe, Inter have been on an incredible adventure, finding themselves in the rarefied air of the semifinal stage of the Champions League.
In both the group stage and the knockout rounds, the Nerazzurri have always seemed to come up with the right performance when it’s mattered most.
This is in stark contrast to the league, particularly over recent weeks, where in must-win matches against fairly beatable opponents on paper, the Nerazzurri have wilted.
This discrepancy has hardly gone unnoticed, and it has meant that Inter are in serious danger of missing out on their key objective of a top four finish in the Serie A table at the end of the season.
The Nerazzurri will play against city rivals AC Milan in a massive two-legged semifinal derby in Europe, whilst the two sides compete for a top four spot in the league just to reach next season’s edition of the Champions League.
Of what he wants to see now in the league, Martinez said that “I want this Inter to show up there as well, everyone has to run for their teammates.”
“We need to be like a family, brothers.”
The striker noted that “We’re working to keep Inter at the top, and once again today we showed that the team is right there, we need to keep going on this path.”
And of what scoring after a long goal drought means to him, Martinez said that “I always try to help the team no matter what.”
“Forwards always thrive on goals, though, today I was able to assist Nicolo and then the goal arrived, it was beautiful to celebrate under the Curva,” he added.
