Inter midfielder Nicolo Barell has been awarded with UEFA’s Champions League goal of the week award for his strike against Benfica in a 3-3 draw at the San Siro on Tuesday evening.

The 26-year-old was named as the scorer of the best goal in the competition during the quarterfinal second leg round for his opening goal in Tuesday’s match, whilst forward Joaquin Correa came in second for scoring the Nerazzurri’s second.

Going into Tuesday’s match, Inter knew that they had an advantage to protect but only a very slender one.

Accordingly, getting their noses in front was to prove massively important for the Nerazzurri in order to give themselves more breathing room and quell some of the momentum of a Benfica side who came prepared to push forward from the start.

Both sides had a few half-chances throughout the first half, but it was Inter midfielder Barella who proved to be the key man to unlock the match.

First Edin Dzeko headed down a long ball into the 26-year-old’s path, and then the midfielder played a one-two with Lautaro Martinez to get himself into the Benfica penalty area with the ball at his feet.

There was still a lot for Barella to do, however, as he was marshalled my several Benfica defenders.

Nevertheless, the former Cagliari midfielder was able to come up with something special, first with a bit of quick footwork to line up an angle to shoot, and then with a perfect curled effort into the top left corner of the net.

Meanwhile, forward Correa scored the Nerazzurri’s third goal in the match, and fifth in the tie overall.

Played in by wingback Federico Dimarco, the 28-year-old former Lazio and Sevilla man scored a similar goal to his teammate but from the opposite side of the box, dribbling into a shooting angle and then placing the ball perfectly to wrap up the tie for Inter.
