Edin Dzeko is the favourite ahead of Romelu Lukaku to start in attack for Inter in this week’s Coppa Italia semifinal second leg against Juventus.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that even with the Belgian’s heroics against Empoli over the weekend, it is still Dzeko who is likely to partner Lautaro Martinez from the first whistle.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi will have a decision to make in attack for Wednesday’s second leg against the Bianconeri.
The 47-year-old has been mixing things up in attack throughout the past few weeks, with all of Lukaku, Dzeko, Martinez, and also Joaquin Correa having started in recent matches.
The fact that Lukaku will be available for the match against Juventus after his suspension was lifted following an executive pardon by FIGC President Gabriele Gravina will certainly be a big boost for Inter.
Moreover, the Belgian put in an outstanding display against Empoli in yesterday afternoon’s 3-0 Serie A victory, proving decisive by scoring two and assisting a third for the Nerazzurri.
All of this could seem to be lining up for Lukaku to get a start against Juventus on Wednesday.
However, according to the Gazzetta this is not the direction that Inter coach Inzaghi is currently leaning in.
Rather, the coach is set to go with the same attacking pairing that had started in the first leg of the semifinal tie against the Bianconeri, of Dzeko and Martinez.
Martinez’s place also looks to be secure, particularly given that the Argentine has scored in each of his last two matches for the Nerazzurri, against Benfica in the Champions League and then against Empoli in the league yesterday, to end a recent goal drought.
Lukaku and Correa, therefore, will be potential options coming off the bench on Wednesday.
