Two key Inter midfielders could be rested in this weekend’s Serie A match against Lazio, in the form of Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that there is a real chance of Roberto Gagliardini starting alongside Hemnrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcelo Brozovic to form the starting midfield trio on Sunday.
Both of Barella and Calhanoglu are likely to be fit for Sunday’s match against the Biancocelesti despite slight injury scares following the Nerazzurri’s Coppa Italia semifinal second leg win over Juventus on Wednesday.
In both cases, the pair had had to come off as they were starting to feel the physical effects of the match, although coach Simone Inzaghi confirmed after the match that both had reassured the medical staff regarding their condition.
Then, medical tests the next day seemed to confirm the coach’s assertion that there was nothing more than fatigue at the heart of the duo’s leaving the pitch.
However, this does not necessarily mean that the pair will start on Sunday.
According to the Gazzetta, there is a real chance that both could be left out of the starting eleven as Inzaghi thinks about managing the fitness of his key players, considering the fixture list will not be getting any less hectic from here on out.
The newspaper reports that Barella and Calhanoglu are slight favourites to start on Sunday, but no more than that.
Meanwhile, in attack both of Romelu Lukaku and Joaquin Correa are expected to come in for Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez in a wholesale rotation of the attacking pair which has become customary between league and cup matches recently.
The Gazzetta’s complete predicted starting eleven for the match is as follows:
Inter (3-5-2): Onana; Darmian, De Vrij, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Brozovic, Mkhitaryan, Gosens; Lukaku, Correa.
