Former Inter defender Francesco Colonnese feels that the Nerazzurri absolutely must not underestimate the difficulty of their match against Lazio this weekend.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster TMW Radio, via FCInterNews, the former defender gave his thoughts ahead of Sunday’s match, stressing that Inter will need to be at their best if they’re to get anything out of it.

Inter have gotten themselves into a position where they virtually cannot afford any result other than a win against Lazio on Sunday.

Accordingly, they will hardly be thrilled at the prospect of coming up against a team who they’ve lost against twice in their last three meetings, needing to take maximum points to keep their heads above water in the race for a top four spot in Serie A.

The Nerazzurri will know that playing at home can be a factor for them, and that they have given a great account of themselves in many of their biggest, highest-pressure matches this season.

However, at the same time, the fatigue and distraction from the intense and gruelling fixture list that the team are currently facing could also play a role, and is something that the players will have to watch out for.

For Colonnese’s part, the former defender is wary of the danger posed by this weekend’s match, and expects it to be one of the tougher fixtures that the Nerazzurri have lined up over the remainder of the season.

He argued that “If Inter play like they did against Juve, then they’re a great team.”

“However, Inter often seem to alternate between matches where they’re hungry to make an impact, and then slip-ups,” he continued.

Colonnese said of this Sunday’s match that “This is a vital match, against a quality team who’ve been very solid.”

“It will be a good match,” he added. “Inter will need to be at their best, it won’t be easy to beat Lazio.”
