Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi hopes that this week’s Serie A match against Hellas Verona can be a chance for Nerazzurri midfielder Kristjan Asllani to be given a chance in the starting eleven.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, the former defender argued that with a match against a relegation-threatened side amid such a hectic fixture list of important matches, it could be the ideal match in which the Albanian can shine.

So far this season, whilst Asllani has made a few starts here and there, the 21-year-old has not exactly made himself a regular presence in the Nerazzurri’s team, either from the start or from the bench.

Whilst the Albanian was brought in from Empoli to be the understudy to Marcelo Brozovic, it has evidently been felt by Inter coach Simone Inzaghi that when Brozovic unexpectedly picked up some injuries, it was better to turn to the experience of Hakan Calhanoglu to deputize for him.

However, when Asllani has started matches, he has not typically looked out of place.

Moreover, it is likely that sooner or later the Albanian, like every player in Inter’s squad, will have his role to play across what promises to be a gruelling season finale for the Nerazzurri.

From the perspective of former defender Bergomi, the emphasis could be on “sooner” here.

“Inter travel to face Verona this week, and I think it’s a match in which they can afford to give a chance to Asllani,” he argued.

“The only player who never gets a rest is Acerbi, who has in any event had a great season.”

“For Inter, each game is always more important than the last,” he noted, “they can’t ever slip up.”

“However, when they do lose there’s nothing for them to do except shake the opponent’s hand and then immediately look to the next one.”
