Italian journalist Paolo Condo feels that the difference in Inter’s 3-1 Serie A win over Lazio yesterday afternoon was made by the fact the Nerazzurri have a deeper squad.

Writing in his column in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica, via FCInter1908, the journalist suggested that the difference was clear between the players who Inter could call upon from the bench compared to those that the Biancocelesti brought on.

Inter needed something a little extra during the second half of yesterday afternoon’s match.

Whilst the Nerazzurri had enjoyed the bulk of possession as well as goalscoring chances for the first half of the match as well as much of the second, they were unable to find a way through, whilst Lazio were able to capitalize on a Francesco Acerbi error in possession to break through.

As such, it was always likely that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi was going to go to his bench.

That is exactly what the 47-year-old did, and the impact that it had was just what was sought.

The Nerazzurri boss made some changes all over the bench in the hopes of giving his team an extra impetus as the clock ticked down without a goal, and in the end he found three, with all three coming from players who had started the match on the bench,

“In general, the theme of the squad depth, crucial after the expansion of the substitutions from three to five, becomes even more of an influence, and easier to see, as the season starts to approach the finish line,” Condo writes.

“This is because it separates the squads suitable for the fight on multiple fronts from those lacking the manpower to fight for everything.”

“Inter-Lazio was a perfet example of this, with Lautaro, Gosens and Calhanoglu all thrown on by Inzaghi, whilst Sarri could hardly call upon players like this,” the journalist continued.
